Areas We Serve
Sod Farm Service Area - Serving the Black Hills, SD
We grow and cut sod on our field at 19340 Shuck Rd in Vale, SD, and deliver across the surrounding Black Hills region; from the plains around Box Elder and Rapid City to the higher, hillier ground around Deadwood and Lead. Wherever your property sits, the goal is the same: sod that’s cut fresh and gets to you quickly, not turf that’s been sitting on a truck or a lot for days before it reaches your yard.
Delivery times and drive distances vary depending on where you’re located, and terrain, elevation, and soil conditions shift enough across our service area that what works for a flat new-construction lot in Box Elder isn’t quite the same situation as a hillside property in Deadwood. Each town below has its own page with details specific to that area; soil, terrain, typical drive time from the farm, and what to expect for delivery or pickup.
Towns we deliver to
- Spearfish, SD — canyon-adjacent lots and newer subdivisions on the north side of the Hills
- Rapid City, SD — our longest regular route, serving both homeowners and contractors across the city
- Sturgis, SD — one of our closest towns, with same-day delivery and self-pickup both practical
- Belle Fourche, SD — river-valley lots and ranch properties on sandier, faster-draining soil
- Deadwood, SD — hillside residential and commercial lots where erosion control matters most
- Lead, SD — South Dakota’s highest-elevation city, with a shorter, later growing season
- Box Elder, SD — fast-growing, flat plains terrain near Ellsworth AFB with heavy new construction

Frequently asked questions
What areas does Dakota Sod Farm deliver to?
Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Belle Fourche, Deadwood, Lead, and Box Elder, along with Whitewood, Piedmont, Black Hawk, Summerset, and parts of southwest North Dakota and northeast Wyoming.
How do I know if my address is in the delivery area?
Call (605) 519-8872 or send your address through the contact form; if you’re near the towns listed above, we can almost always work something out even if your exact location isn’t listed.
How do I know if my address is in the delivery area?
Pickup at the farm is available regardless of where you’re located — it’s really a question of whether the drive makes sense for your load and vehicle. Closer towns like Sturgis make it easy; farther towns like Deadwood, Lead, or Rapid City are more often worth choosing delivery instead.
Does the best time to plant sod vary depending on which town I'm in?
Yes, mainly due to elevation and terrain. Lower, flatter areas like Box Elder and Belle Fourche tend to have earlier spring and later fall planting windows, while higher-elevation towns like Lead have a shorter season that opens later and closes earlier. Call ahead and we’ll tell you where the field stands for your area.
How far will Dakota Sod Farm deliver outside these listed towns?
We deliver beyond this list on a case-by-case basis, including parts of southwest North Dakota and northeast Wyoming. If you’re not sure whether your address is within reach, call or send it through the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Which town do you deliver to most often, and which is farthest from the farm?
Sturgis is our closest regular delivery, at roughly 20 miles from the farm in Vale. Box Elder and Deadwood/Lead are our farthest routes, each around 40–50 miles depending on the exact address; we still deliver to all of them regularly, they just get scheduled with a bit more lead time.
